VETERINARIAN – FULL TIME

Dharamsala Animal Rescue (DAR) is a small team of 13 people but it is the largest street dog welfare organization in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh.

DAR’s Mission Statement: Our mission is to end the human/street dog conflict by creating a humane and sustainable environment for animals with direct benefits to the people of Dharamsala, India.DAR sterilises, vaccinates, administers medical treatment, shelters, promotes adoption of stray dogs, and runs education programmes on animal welfare in schools and rural villages.

Job Title and Summary: This Veterinary Surgeon will work based at our location in Rakkar Village, Dharamshala. Your first 3 months will be a training program. The vet will be trained for 3 months training in high quality spay/ neuter using WVS protocols (WVS certificate is a plus).

This vet will be trained in our Standard Operating Procedures to properly diagnose, develop treatment plans including medicine, exercise, food, and overall well-being. The vet will also perform ancillary soft-tissue procedures, provide emergency veterinary treatment to sick and injured dogs, and communicate with the public regarding the importance of sterilisation and vaccination.

 Key Responsibilities: Perform safe, sterile and humane sterilisations on male and female free-roaming dogs and pets. Perform safe and sterile general surgeries including amputation and tumor removals. Follow DAR protocols and policies, working to the highest possible medical standards. Meet weekly targets of minimum dogs sterilised per month. Observe, analyse and solve daily problems. Communicate with community, dog feeders and owners regarding responsible pet ownership and the importance of sterilisation and vaccination. Perform ancillary soft-tissue procedures, treat sick and injured dogs and cats when there is necessity (provide emergency veterinary treatment). Manage emergencies and post-op complication cases as they present to the clinic.

As part of the DAR team, be available to help as needed, even with tasks that are outside of the job description; cleaning, dog walking, vaccination camps, education programs and more.

This position will report to the DAR Director.

Skills and Qualifications: Must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and valid license to practice veterinary medicine in India. Passionate about animal welfare and willing to learn. Fair English communication skills and must work well with a diverse staff and a female-led team.
